What Is More Effective Than Omega 3 Greens?

With the increasing awareness in people about their health, more and more people are shifting towards essential omega-3 fatty acids. Unfortunately, our bodies cannot manufacture these essential fats, so we need to include them in our diet. There are basically two broad based sources of omega3 namely plants and animals; omega 3 greens are plant based.

Omega 3 greens contain only ALA type of omega3 fatty acids. Since, body’s conversion process of ALA to DHA and EPA (most readily absorbed omega three fats) is very complex and not very effective; our body remains deficient in essential omega 3 fatty acids even after having ALA. Another point to keep in mind is that, with the increase in pollution and usage of pesticides, quality of fruits and vegetable is deteriorating every day. As a result there is a decrease in content of ALA we get from them.

Thus, to compensate for this deficiency — either we have to take ALA fats in huge quantity or shift to a high DHA and EPA food source.

Food sources containing omega 3 greens are broccoli, seaweeds, spinach, kale, spring greens, cabbage, brussels sprouts, parsley and dark salad leaves.

Fish on the other hand is a rich source of DHA and EPA type of omega-3 fats. With oceans full of pollution; fishes caught from them are also contaminated. Hence, it serves no purpose to ingest these tainted fishes and wish for omega 3 benefits. On the contrary, consumption of these polluted fishes can result in many ailments like mercury and arsenic poisoning.

The best thing to do is to take an Omega-3 fish oil supplement on a daily basis. You have to make sure that fish oil you buy has undergone molecular distillation process to remove the contaminants like lead, mercury and the PCBs. Scientific studies have proved that supplements prepared after mixing tuna oil and hoki oil increases the benefits by two and half times. Hoki is a less known fish found in pristine water of southern coast of New Zealand; it is naturally high in DHA. Fish oil thus extracted also has high DHA to EPA ratio; this means it is more effective and has better health benefits.

In conclusion, Omega 3 greens are good only if you are a pure vegetarian; otherwise I would recommend you to look for an effective fish oil supplement as discussed above.

I totally agree about the dangers of transfats & polyunsaturated oils (PUFA). I think PUFAs are fine *in whole food sources* but not as an oil product. They are fragile & go rancid quickly after separation from the whole food source – this rancidity creates free radicals in the body. If omega 6/omega 3 ratio is maintained AND PUFAs are from whole food sources, I don't think there is a problem. I advocate a high fat diet (>65% of calories from dietary fat sources) but think that most of those calories (>50%) should be from saturated fats.

I believe the health degeneration is from the combination of a high carb diet & low fat with most of the fatty acids coming from transfats & PUFAs.

They are finding that the brain is self healing of diseases if provided fat as fuel instead of sugar as fuel. I believe they will eventually accept (as they did for hundreds of years in the past and not the last 25 years of the low fat era, as obesity reaches epidemic proportions – in the last 20 years) that sugar corrodes and that fats are essential to good health.

The body is a self healing unit – provide it with necessary nutrition and it should fix most any disease with out drug treatments.

Glucose is the bodies preferred fuel (if you want to get technical, it actually burns alcohol most efficiently, but that doesn't make it any healthier for the body or brain than carbs), the body can convert 100% of carbs, 58% of protein & 10% of dietary fat into glucose. The body can also be fueled by fat (dietary fat & fat cells) but only in the absence of carbs. Your brain actually prefers* to be fueled by ketones (part of the fat burning process), it does require glucose also, but glucose can be easily converted from excess protein if needed or dietary fat.

The brain gets its energy from ketone bodies when insufficient glucose is available. After blood glucose is lowered for 3 days, the brain gets 30% of its energy from ketone bodies. After 40 days, this goes up to 70% (during the initial stages the brain does not burn ketones, since they are an important substrate for lipid synthesis in the brain). In time the brain reduces its glucose requirements from 120g to 40g per day.

Ketones have been described as "magic" in their ability to increase metabolic efficiency, while decreasing production of free radicals, the damaging byproducts of normal metabolism. The heart and brain operate 25% more efficiently using ketones as a source of energy

This is from recent research -

new evidence demonstrating several amazingly positive benefits of a very low-carb, high-fat diet including in the treatment of Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Lou Gehrig's disease, epilepsy and even brain cancer.

Lead researcher Dr. Theodore B. VanItallie, from the St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York, believed that a "hyperketogenic" diet would serve as an excellent natural remedy for Parkinson's disease because the excess ketones in such a diet consisting almost entirely of fat would trick the body into healing itself without the use of drug therapy.

Carbs the only thing that triggers insulin (the fat storage hormone) which causes obesity.

Obese People Have 'Severe Brain Degeneration'

A new study finds obese people have 8 percent less brain tissue than normal-weight individuals. Their brains look 16 years older than the brains of lean individuals, researchers said today.

Those classified as overweight have 4 percent less brain tissue and their brains appear to have aged prematurely by 8 years.

The results, based on brain scans of 94 people in their 70s, represent "severe brain degeneration," said Paul Thompson, senior author of the study and a UCLA professor of neurology.

"That's a big loss of tissue and it depletes your cognitive reserves, putting you at much greater risk of Alzheimer's and other diseases that attack the brain," said Thompson. "But you can greatly reduce your risk for Alzheimer's, if you can eat healthily and keep your weight under control."

One century ago the risk of developing cancer was 1 in 50. Now it is closer to 1 in 2. Cancer is the number one cause of death. In this video rather controversial hypotheses about how to prevent and how to force back cancer.

Gary Taubes who wrote "Good Calories, Bad Calories" spent 7 years going through all the studies over the last century & dividing up the real science from the faulty science & concluded that low carb was the best way to control insulin levels which balances out other hormones & allows the body to function properly.

A few of his main points regarding health are:

Through their direct effects on insulin & blood sugar, refined carbs, starches, sugars are the dietary cause of coronary heart disease & diabetes. They are likely dietary causes of cancer, Alzheimer's & other diseases.

Dietary fat, whether saturated or not, is not a cause of obesity, heart disease or any other chronic disease.

The problem is refined carbs in diet, their effect on insulin secretion & the hormonal regulation of homeostasis.

7 Reasons to Eat More Saturated Fat

    1) Healthy brain

Your brain is mainly made of fat & cholesterol. Though highly unsaturated essential fatty acids found in cold-water fish (EPA & DHA) are important for brain & nerve function, most of the fatty acids in the brain are actually saturated. The brain needs saturated fats to function optimally.

    2) Stronger bones

Saturated fat is required for calcium to be incorporated into bone – According to expert in human health, Mary Enig, Ph.D., as much as 50 percent of the fats in the diet should be saturated fats.

    3) Improved liver health
Studies show that saturated fat encourages the liver cells to dump fat content. Saturated fat has been shown to protect the liver from the toxic insults of alcohol & medications and even to reverse the damage.

    4) Healthy lungs

For proper function, the airspaces of the lungs have to be coated with a thin layer of lung surfactant. The fat content of lung surfactant is 100 percent saturated fatty acids. Replacement of these critical fats by other types of fat makes faulty surfactant & potentially causes breathing difficulties, collapse of the airspaces & respiratory distress.

    5) Improved cardiovascular risk factors

Saturated fat in the diet reduces the levels of lipoprotein (a) abbreviated Lp(a)—that correlates strongly with risk for heart disease. The only dietary means of lowering Lp(a) is eating saturated fat. Eating fats raises the level of HDL, the so-called good cholesterol.

    6) Proper nerve signaling

Certain saturated fats, found in butter, lard, coconut oil, & palm oil, function directly as signaling messengers that influence the metabolism. Without the correct signals to tell the organs & glands what to do, the job gets done improperly.

    7) Strong immune system

Saturated fats found in butter & coconut oil (myristic acid & lauric acid) play key roles in immune health. Loss of sufficient saturated fatty acids in the white blood cells hampers their ability to recognize & destroy foreign invaders, such as viruses, bacteria, & fungi. Myristic & lauric acid have potent germ-killing ability. We need dietary replenishment of them to keep the immune system vigilant against the development of cancerous cells & infectious invaders.
